... as told by an 'average Joe' American
raised Protestant, who became 'educated', thought he knew better and became agnostic.
In 1989, my Mom was diagnosed with
cirrhosis of the liver. It was in the latter stages and she wasn't expected to make it through the
night. Best case, she might make it a day or two more.
I was devastated!! Afterall, she was 52 years old and still had plenty of years ahead of
her... or so I thought. There was still so much I wanted to share with her... having her at
my wedding, seeing my future kids and the list goes on.
Being agnostic as of late, I was searching for answers. Nothing made sense. I
thought to myself, I'll try anything, I'll DO anything to help my Mother live a little
longer. I was at wits end. I couldn't think of anyway I could
help. So I got down on my knees and made a prayer to God through his son Jesus Christ. Afterall,
I was out of options and had to turn somewhere. That night, I promised that if my Mom
made it through the night, I'd become a Christian and go to church every Sunday and
make Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior.
Well, my Mom made it through the night. In fact, she lived another seven years up
until she past away in July 1997.
During that time, the seven years of her recovery, the promise was forgotten and life went
on as it was. Back to my dead end job, married and divorced and still not knowing any
better or learning anything from what had transpired that night back in 1989.
Like I said, I was agnostic at the time (didn't believe or disbelieve in God or Christ,
just needed a little proof) and so when my Mom survived the night and another 7 years, you'd
think... there you go, there's your proof! What more do you need???
I forgot about that little promise I had made and we went on with our lives. My Mom then
died and I caught myself thinking.... what more could I have done? Then it hits me! That
one night I sincerely placed my faith in Jesus Christ and He didn't let me down.
He came through with His end of the deal, but I faltered on my end. I didn't go to
church and didn't accept Jesus as my Savior.
To this day, I still regret not taking advantage of that additional time God provided
for me and my Mother. I asked for her forgiveness and that of the Father and have since asked
Jesus to be my Lord and Savior as I know He's always helping and is always with me. Now, He's with my
Mother too as she was a believer and always had Him in her heart. I know He's with me too as He's provided me
a loving wife, Marianne, and two beautiful kids... 7 year old Morgan, 6 year old Wil as well as a
great career path!
God is always providing and always giving through His teachings and through
the reading of the Word in the Bible. He gives so much that He gave His own life
through Jesus Christ for all of mankind's sins. He teaches honor and integrity
and is always striving to make this world a better place. Loving your neighbors and friends is
the easy part. Loving thy enemies is where we all need a little help. Ask Jesus for
forgiveness. Forgive others for the wrong they may have committed on you. That's a good
start. There are so many things man can be doing to better himself and the world he
lives.
There is more to this life than the material things that man obsesses over. There is eternal
life by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Learn the Word of the Lord and let's make
this world a more pleasurable place to live, now and beyond.

We never really know when it's going to be OUR time. Make each moment count!
Praise Jesus!
